post Progressing

Haven’t posted in a while. Jamming has been going progressively well, and finally in the last jam we got some real solid framework going. It’s going to be a while before I post any of our songs, but maybe a few clips will end up on here so you can get a “taste” of what we are striving for.

I’m finding that the hardest thing to manage is converting my old solo acoustic songs into loud electric jams.

Slowly starting to remember how to play the electric guitar, standing up, w/ a pick. All those years of playing gigs “unplugged” has really taken a toll on my playing style and habits. So, at the beginning of this jam I simply turned on the mini-disc recorder and set it on the floor in no particular fashion/direction. The overall recording actually ended up being surprisingly good, and a great way to remember what we were thinking and doing at the time. I actually think recording every jam is very important for any band when it comes to capturing the “mix” when its nice and hot.

So last Saturday just Ed and I got together and did an acoustic jam. I realize now after speaking with him that we do get more accomplished when it’s quiet and we can focus on specifics. All in all, this is going very well, just need to write more!

post 2nd Jam

First off, 1 space heater is good, 2 space heater is better. I can’t WAIT to jam with 2 heaters!!!

Our second jam actually went really well. We had about 3 songs that we kinda let go into and it seems we are getting closer to knowing what we like to play and how we like to play it. I honestly see us at about 20 jams knowing finally what we will be doing, but this kind of loose, “let it come” method is working great.

Tomorrow is our 3rd jam and I’m going to bring my open stereo microphone and see what I can capture so we remember what we were doing. For me, recording the beginning is more important than the end product, because sometimes in the heat of it, you forget or lose what was the best part. Ask Frank Zappa, (if he was alive) if he EVER jammed with his band members and DIDN’T record it. Frank’s the man, and always recored every second of every jam he ever did. So, if you haven’t already downloaded the “Joe’s Garage” .zip file below, do so, and enjoy.

So today we finally moved into our new rehearsal studio. It’s pretty good for the price and we’re still lacking heat which is a key element in the jamming process. If your hands are cold you can’t play the guitar, period.

We played for a few hours and then went up to a local bar to grab a bite and have a few beers.

This is gonna work out fine, just fine.
